International Relations and Our Sister Cities


Koka shares Sister City relations with three cities in the U.S. and Icheon in South Korea. Since establishing these connections, Koka continues to strengthen its ties through regular goodwill missions and exchange programs.

Traverse City, Michigan, U.S.A.


Located in the northwest corner of Michigan's lower peninsula, Traverse City is a scenic town of about 15,000 residents. Similar in climate to Japan's northern island of Hokkaido, pleasant weather attracts a large number of visitors during the summer months. It is known as a popular tourist destination for water activities and golfing. Furthermore, Traverse City produces a large portion of the nation's tart cherries, and they are the self proclaimed "Cherry Capital of the World." Each July the city plays host to the National Cherry Festival.

Exchange Opportunities
Traverse City and the former town of Tsuchiyama first signed a sister city agreement on May 20, 1970. After Tsuchiyama's incorporation into Koka City, sister city ties were reaffirmed in 2005. Traverse City and Koka City engage in regular Junior High School exchanges as well as general citizen exchanges through the Michigan-Shiga Goodwill Mission.

DeWitt, Michigan, U.S.A.


DeWitt, politically separated into DeWitt City and DeWitt Charter Township, is a serene community located just north of Michigan's capital, Lansing. The population of the City and Township combined is roughly 18,000 people and growing. With its beautiful and safe environment, DeWitt is known as one of the most attractive places to live in Michigan.

Exchange Opportunities
DeWitt and the former town of Konan first signed a sister city agreement on April 4, 1994. After Konan's incorporation into KokaCity, sister city ties were reaffirmed in 2005. DeWitt and KokaCity engage in regular Junior High School exchanges as well as general citizen exchanges through the Michigan-Shiga Goodwill Mission.

Marshall, Michigan, U.S.A.


Half way between Detroit and Lake Michigan, Marshall is a town of about 7,500 nestled in south-central Michigan. Lined with many historic homes and buildings dating back to the 1800's, Marshall creates a Victorian Era atmosphere.

Exchange Opportunities
Marshall and the former town of Koka first signed a sister city agreement on April 20, 1984. After Koka's incorporation into KokaCity, sister city ties were reaffirmed in 2005. Marshall and KokaCity engage in regular Junior High School exchanges as well as general citizen exchanges through the Michigan-Shiga Goodwill Mission.

Icheon, Republic of Korea


The City of Icheon, with a population of about 200,000, is located in the southeastern portion of Kyonggi-doProvence. This is a city where urban industry and rural farming exist together in harmony. With access to a number of major highways, Icheon is home to several important industries. They are famous for delicious rice, juicy peaches and impressive pottery.

Exchange Opportunities
As Icheon and the former town of Shigaraki are both known for their ceramics, they entered into a sister city agreement on October 23, 1999. After Shigaraki's incorporation into KokaCity, sister city ties were reaffirmed in 2005. Icheon and KokaCity engage in ceramic related exchanges as well as regular Junior High School exchanges.
