Minakuchi Castle was built in 1634 as a rest stop for the shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu during his travels to and from Kyoto. It was modeled after Kyoto's Nijo Castle and was used for several centuries, however it was abandoned as an official residence during the Meiji Restoration of the late 19th century.
